Current ProjectsHSNES is currently involved and sponsors the following projects: The Ra's al-Hadd (Oman) Project (May 2005 Report)The first field season of the Greek Archaeological Expedition to Ra's al-Hadd in Oman, took place in December 2004 and January 2005 under HSNES sponsorship in collaboration with the Aristotelian University of Thessalonica and the University of Macedonia with the approval of the Omani Department of Antiquities. The Documentation and Conservation of the Mosaics of Syria Programme,funded by the European Centre for Byzantine and Post-Byzantine Monuments in collaboration with the Damascus University and Department of Antiquities of Syria has begun. Excavations at Khirbet Qazone (Jordan)An HSNES rescue excavation was conducted in March and April of 2004 at Khirbet Qazone, a unique 1st-3rd century AD cemetery site located on the eastern shore of the Dead Sea. Significantly, it is comparable to Khirbet Qumran where the Essenes were thought to have written the Dead Sea Scrolls. Support also came from the National Geographic Society and the British Academy. Zoara (Ghor es-Safi) ExcavationsSurvey and excavations were conducted in the Ghor es-Safi during March and April 2004. The project was sponsored by the HSNES and supported by the Palestine Exploration Fund in collaboration with the Department of Antiquities of Jordan. The Basilica of Aghios Lot Mosaic Pavements Conservation Project in JordanThe conservation project for the mosaic pavements at the basilica of Aghios Lot in Jordan was conducted from February to April 2002. The work will be completed oncce the museum and selte are erected. The International Wadi Farasa ProjectThe International Wadi Farasa Project (IWFP) focuses on one of the most fascinating tomb complexes of ancient Petra, the capital of the Nabataeans in southern Jordan. Tell Kufrein Survey and ExcavationThree seasons of archaeological work have been conducted at Tell Kufrein (Jordan)in 2005 by a team from the University of Ioannina under the direction of Professor Thanasis Papadopoulos, who are all HSNES members. Excavations resumed in 2006. |
